Surveys Show we want
more information
With 1447 Territorians
taking part in the Statehood Steering Committee’s Show Surveys
at this year’s Rural Shows, 52% indicated they are not comfortable
or not sure whether they are comfortable with their current level
of understanding about Statehood.
The Northern Territory Statehood Steering Committee undertook surveys
as part of activities at the Fred’s Pass, Alice Springs, Tennant
Creek, Katherine and Darwin Shows.
“The survey results show us we have plenty of work to do”
Committee Co-Chair Sue Bradley said in response to the preliminary
analysis of the figures released today.
Speaking face to face with thousands of Territorians about Statehood
and formally surveying almost one percent of the population has
provided the Statehood Steering Committee with baseline data to
inform the development of an education and communication plan.
“The 2005 Shows offered us a terrific opportunity to speak
directly to Territorians about their views and understanding of
Statehood. It is not a simple concept and we were pleased with the
willingness of Territorians to discuss the issues with us.
“42% of Territorians need more information before they will
support Statehood. It is our role to provide that information in
the best ways possible.” Sue Bradley said.
43% of those surveyed are willing to receive more information from
the Statehood Steering Committee. 30% of those surveyed want information
in the mail; the second most popular means of communication identified
was television. The complete figures are in the attached document
which will be placed on the Statehood Website.
Members of the Statehood Steering Committee will be at the Borroloola
Show this Friday 19 August to talk to more Territorians about Statehood.
