Margaret Vigants Acting Committee Co-Chair
1007 Territorians and Counting
The Northern Territory
Statehood Steering Committee has so far surveyed 1007 Territorians
about Statehood during the 2005 Show Circuit.
The three days of the Darwin Show, starting this Thursday 21 July
and concluding on Saturday evening 23 July will give locals and
visitors from around the NT an opportunity to talk to Committee
representatives and be counted.
“The results so far have been tremendous” Acting Co-Chair
Margaret Vigants said today.
“At the Katherine Show we took 208 surveys, 139 at Tennant
Creek Show, 342 at the Alice Springs Show and 318 at the Fred’s
Pass Rural Show. We now have 1007 and counting…
“We were originally aiming for 1000 for all five shows, but
with these great results maybe we can do 1500 or more, said Ms Vigants.
“We have had our first ten Fact Sheets available at each show
and plan to complete a further two, giving us twelve in time for
the Darwin Show. The Fact Sheets attempt to answer some of the questions
we are getting.
“All Territorians in town for the Darwin Show are invited
to come along and have some fun, grab a tattoo and a sticker, meet
us at the Statehood stand, learn some more about Statehood and most
importantly, tell us what they think.
“The Darwin Show is another great opportunity for everyone
to talk about Statehood.” said Ms Vigants.
The Northern Territory Statehood Steering Committee is made up of
14 community members and three members of the Legislative Assembly.
Its role is to consult widely and develop strategies to provide
education on Statehood issues for all Territorians.
