Margaret Vigants Acting Co-Chair
Katherine Show Statehood
Challenge
The Northern Territory
Statehood Steering Committee will be at the Katherine Show this
week circulating Fact Sheets and surveying locals about Statehood.
“We are laying down a challenge to the people of Katherine
– will they surpass the number of people who visited us at
last week’s Tennant Creek Show?” Acting Committee Co-Chair
Margaret Vigants asked today.
At the Tennant Creek Show 139 Territorians completed the inaugural
Statehood Survey. This follows the 318 who filled out a survey at
the Fred’s Pass Rural Show, and the 342 people at the Alice
Springs Show.
“With 799 already counted we are aiming to survey more than
1000 Territorians by the end of the Show Circuit this year, the
people of Katherine should take the opportunity to be counted and
tell us their views on Statehood” Ms Vigants said.
“The first ten of our newly developed Fact Sheets on Statehood
issues, will also be available for the first time to people in Katherine.”
As well as surveys, there is fun for the kids with Statehood stickers,
balloons and tattoos and on a serious note we are offering Statehood
Committee representatives to follow up with visits or further information
if people have an ongoing interest.
“Come along and have some fun, meet us at the Statehood stand,
learn some more about Statehood and most importantly, tell us what
you think.
“This is a great opportunity for everyone to talk about Statehood,
we have enjoyed the shows immensely and as a former long time resident
of the Katherine region, this show is a personal highlight.”
said Ms Vigants.
The Northern Territory Statehood Steering Committee is made up of
14 community members and three members of the Legislative Assembly.
Its role is to consult widely and develop strategies to provide
education on Statehood issues for all Territorians.
