More Than 80 Territorians put their hands up for Statehood

82 Territorians have put themselves forward to be part of the history making new Statehood Steering Committee.

During a recent advertising campaign Territorians were asked to nominate to serve on a new Statehood Committee representing everyone in communities across the Territory from Central Australia to the Top End.

The Committee will be truly community based; all Territorians will be running the Statehood agenda.

“Each and every one of these Territorians should be congratulated for taking the time and making the effort to seek nomination.”

“It’s great to see this level of interest from fellow Territorians about Statehood and being part of this new beginning for Territory Statehood.” Committee Chair Elliot McAdam said today.

The Legislative Assembly Standing Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs will meet in the coming week to consider the applications and undertake the difficult task of selecting those for the Statehood Steering Committee.

“It is going to be very difficult because I have had a look at some of the applications and they are all of a very high standard” Mr McAdam said

“Once the Steering Committee is up and running it will give all Territorians a place to participate in discussions about statehood.”

“If there are any more Territorians wanting to make a late nomination there is still time, but they will have to be fast.”

“Contact the Office of the Statehood Steering Committee on 8946 1418 before Wednesday 16 February to get any last minute forms in and be part of the push for Statehood. “
