OZ Day ’09: Michael Gunner MLA with Sharon McAlear proudly wearing their Statehood gear.

E
very year on January 26th   we come together as a nation to celebrate all things great about Australia.

Australia Day celebrations are a proud tradition in the Territory with no shortage of backyard BBQs and cricket games.

In Darwin the day always kicks off at Mindil Beach with the Australia Day Fun Run and this year the Statehood Steering Committee joined 2500 other Territorians to celebrate.

Michael Gunner led the charge with the committee’s Executive Officer Carolynne James at his side.

“I’m a proud Australian and a proud Territorian,” said Mr Gunner.

“The fun run was a great opportunity to remember how lucky we are to live in Australia, but it’s also a time to commit to working towards a stronger Territory and a stronger community.

“Australia day reminds me that until the Territory becomes a state Territorians are missing out.”

“The Statehood Steering Committee is committed to making the Territory equal to the rest of the country.

“The Territory is an amazing place, but the best is yet to come when we gain Statehood.”

Sign up for the Territory’s ‘Foot’-ure

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

Thousands have shown their support for Statehood by signing the Statehood Steering Committee’s ‘foot’ petition at campaign events held in Darwin, Alice Springs, Tennant Creek and Katherine last month.

‘We’ve been busy talking about the subject with Territorians from all walks of life, collecting thousands of signed feet images in support for Statehood’, said Committee Co-Chair, Fran Kilgariff.

‘All the feet are coming with us to Canberra later this year to be displayed in a visual artwork. We want to show all of Australia just how serious Territorians are about having equal rights to those of other Australians’, said Fran Kilgariff.

There is still time for Territorians who have yet to sign the foot petition do so- stay tuned to this website for location updates or alternatively, call the Statehood office on 8946 1437.

Walking Together Towards Statehood Campaign

Monday, June 30th, 2008

On Monday, 30th of June, the Statehood Steering Committee launched its new Walking Together Towards Statehood awareness campaign at Parliament House.

The Campaign aims to raise awareness not just on the debate surrounding the subject of Statehood but, to promote the movement FOR Statehood- the long overdue advancement of the Northern Territory becoming the 7th State in the Australian Federation.

As the Campaign title symbolically suggests, Statehood, will happen when all of us unite and begin ‘Walking Together Towards’ constitutional equality: ‘Statehood’.

Phase one of the Walking Together Towards Statehood campaign takes place in July 2008 and consists of grass roots events in Alice Springs, Tennant Creek and Katherine. Phase 2 later this year this will see the Committee travels to Canberra to lobby Federal politicians, followed by 2009’s Constitutional workshops marking phase three. The Constitutional Convention, scheduled for 2010 will complete the Campaign.
