Australia Day: good reason to raise the Statehood flag

OZ Day ’09: Michael Gunner MLA with Sharon McAlear proudly wearing their Statehood gear.
Every year on January 26th we come together as a nation to celebrate all things great about Australia.
Australia Day celebrations are a proud tradition in the Territory with no shortage of backyard BBQs and cricket games.
In Darwin the day always kicks off at Mindil Beach with the Australia Day Fun Run and this year the Statehood Steering Committee joined 2500 other Territorians to celebrate.
Michael Gunner led the charge with the committee’s Executive Officer Carolynne James at his side.
“I’m a proud Australian and a proud Territorian,” said Mr Gunner.
“The fun run was a great opportunity to remember how lucky we are to live in Australia, but it’s also a time to commit to working towards a stronger Territory and a stronger community.
“Australia day reminds me that until the Territory becomes a state Territorians are missing out.”
“The Statehood Steering Committee is committed to making the Territory equal to the rest of the country.
“The Territory is an amazing place, but the best is yet to come when we gain Statehood.”
